Abstract

An architectural project for the expansion of the Palonegro International Airport is presented in this research in order to meet capacity needs, boost exports, tourism, the northeast connection of the country and at the same time turn this infrastructure into a symbol of Santander, and a benchmark in the field of regional airports in the world. To carry out this study, the physical needs of the expansion were identified, using the International Air Transport Association (IATA) reference manual for the provision of an efficient service, the unique characteristics that this expansion requires to potentiate the benefits were also identified. Priority productive sectors of the region and the architectural characteristics that will allow it to become one of Santander’s symbols in the world. Subsequently, multicriteria matrices were used that integrate the table of characteristics identified with the alternatives, solutions and innovations that have been used in different similar projects around the world to define a final architectural program and consistent with the projected capacity of an airport on the horizon of 30 years.
