Restauración y ampliación del teatro San Jorge. Equipamiento para el fortalecimiento de la cultura y la educación del barrio San Victorino

Abstract

The San Jorge Theater, built between 1936 and 1938 with an Art Deco style in the San Victorino neighborhood, became the most important theater in Bogota in the 1940s. Despite its importance, multiple events contributed to its destruction during the following years and it was not until 2001 that it was declared a Cultural Property. Today the theater is abandoned and in an advanced state of deterioration, transforming not only its image, but also that of the neighborhood. For this reason, the restoration and intervention of the theatre is proposed, maintaining and reintegrating those elements that characterized it and made it unique; as well as generating an extension with an artistic educational focus, which will serve as a support for the theatre and architecturally help to modify the image of the sector. A pathological survey of the theatre will be carried out to identify the degree of deterioration in which it is, as well as a study of the context at a local level to find out the potentialities and deficiencies of the sector, without leaving aside all the regulations that must be implemented because it is a Property of Cultural Interest. Also, based on theory related to heritage restoration, we will take a position which benefits both the theatre and its context. The restoration and expansion of the San Jorge Theater, accompanied by a treatment of public space, will offer new cultural and educational spaces that will successfully change the image and dynamics of the San Victorino neighborhood.
