Abstract
In this article is analyzed the poor academic performance of the students in the test “SABER 11” at La Giralda school from 2010 to 2013 and its connection with the information of the survey
realized by 34 students to know their expectations in English learning taking into account
socioeconomic and cultural problems in which environment they are living. This is contrasted
with Abraham Maslow theory and his hierarchical organization of the needs and the same with
the competences that ICFES evaluate. According to this, we can conclude that the student
doesn’t have motivation to learn a foreign language and it is reflected in their poor academic
performance in the test “SABER 11” which increased not much during four years
